Around Bloomington/Indy for the summer? There are lots of arts and cultural events happening around town in the next week, check out the following!:

ARTS & CULTURAL EVENTS

Bloomington Gallery Walk First Friday // Friday, June 5

  • Description: Galleries and artsy shops around downtown open to the public for a fun night of new art, snack food, and community activities. Walk from venue to venue throughout the evening to see some great shows! Note: there are many more venues that participate than are listed on the map below. If you end up going, be sure to also check out Gather in the Fountain Square Mall, Rainbow Bakery and the rest of the I. Fell Building.

Open Studios Tour // Saturday, June 6 & Sunday, June 7

  • Description: “The Bloomington Open Studios Tour is a an artist-run event showcasing the rich diversity of local visual art talent in the area. You can see artists working in their own studios (and in some cases visiting at studios of their friends). The earlier Bloomington Open Studios Tours were quite successful for artists and patrons alike. This year is the largest tour yet with 45 participating area artists. It’s a completely free, completely open-ended, 2 day event on June 6th and 7th. You drive, walk or bike around from one studio to another seeing the artists and their work.” -Open Studios website

Limestone Comedy Festival // Thursday, June 4-Sunday, June 7

  • Description: Bloomington’s very own comedy festival! Featuring nationally known comedians like Janeane Garofalo, Michael Che & Kyle Kinane.

NUVO Cultural Vision Awards // Tuesday, June 9

  • Description: Reception and award ceremony honoring Indianapolis innovators in the arts, music, food, social justice & sports. Open to the public!
  • Time: 5-7pm
  • Location: Indiana Landmarks Center, Indianapolis (map here)

ArtPrize Pitch Night // Wednesday, June 10

  • Description: “New for 2015, ArtPrize is partnering with the Indianapolis Museum of Art to help fund an ambitious project by an Indiana artist for a prominent ArtPrize venue. Artists will create proposals for an installation on the empty second floor of a downtown office building located at 250 Monroe, in the heart of the ArtPrize district. Five artists will be selected to give a five-minute presentation using five slides each. A panel of five experts and the audience will be able to ask questions of the artists following the presentations.” -IMA website

Make it Digital!: Video Special Effects Course // Thursday, June 4

  • Description: Learn Adobe After Effects, a 3D motion graphics software that allows you to make animations for your video projects! This class is part of a larger series of “Maker Days” classes offered at the Monroe County Public Library in downtown Bloomington. Check out their summer course schedule here. Note: some courses are age restricted, but many are for all ages. Note 2: check out the new digital creativity space in the library, Level Up, which offers all kinds of software, video/audio equipment, staff experts in digital media, and much more…free to the public!

Bloomington Code School: Summer Session // June 15-August 26

  • Description: Learn to code for free with Bloomington Code School! Courses available in web design, front end development, and PHP.
  • Time: Classes meet once per week at various times, see above link for details
